The Continued Irony of the Book Eli Protected

While watching The Book of Eli I reminded myself that although this film centers around a bible, the irony exists for all books of religion – all religion. The violence that went down in this film showed how ironic it all can be when people ‘OK’ the murder of others for these trinkets and ideals. The idea that many who murdered and claimed that this book spoke of “The Good Word” of God and OK’ed killings in order to protect this word was a joke. The fact that after losing the book, Eli was still able to dictate the fucking book shows that he could have given up the book from the first moment it was requested. [SPOILER} The funny thing is that the goddamn book was in braille. Would he not have had to dictate the book anyway? Was there someone else who would have been able to understand braille in the new Library of Congress relocated to Alcatraz?

In essence it is as if the film makers thought that this small detail would not have had to be explained. Eli murdered and caused the murder of others to get a book of braille to a new Library of Congress where there were other “Holy Books” present – just not a Kings James Version of the Bible. Were there other versions of “holy writings” but this needed version of the liar was essential to complete the collection? The binding even looked the same as most King James versions do.

I was not moved or impressed with the undertone of the film as so many others seemed to be. Was it the fact that Eli was blind and you were moved at his precise way of murdering folks? Or the way he turned around and spoke to folks in the film as though he could see them? Maybe he was semi-blind or just had really good thermal skills? Either way, this film was not the ball of revelation many attempted to push off as it continued to push the misconception that all was good as murders took place in the name of “The Good Book” once more; even after an apocalypse.
