I caught this via browsing the channels and it seemed interesting. Out of no where Mario decided to open up his life on television via MTV. Seems that through all the accomplishments he’s been able to achieve, Mario has also been dealing with his mom who has a drug addiction. He went to his old home where he used to lie and found fans there. He asked if he could come in & revisit with the camera crew and they were all too happy to oblige. After strolling down memory lane, he begins to explain how his mom was using throughout his life. His grandmother was a large influence in his life as she stepped up to the plate and raised him. After she passed when he was 12 he began to go down a troubled path. Soon he was being motivated by his mom to go after his singing career. After meeting his manager at a talent show he was involved in, she began to get heavier into her addiction.

He blew up and now mom is back. She’s gone into rehab after being active for about 23 years and is now back to take on a more active role in his life & career. This may prove to be an issue because those who have been in his life all these years are being bum rushed by his mom. The question is, can she remain off the substance long enough to truly be there for her son? He’s pretty much grown up into a man and a steady, successful product who has a mom who now wants to pick-up where she left off. That’s impossible. She now wants to be notified of every aspect of his life and career. Whatever.

Mario is an intelligent man who has come to recognize when his mother may be out of it and using. Although she claims to be clean, she is clearly showing signs of a user. Slurred speech and confused thoughts. Mario says he can smell the stench of cocaine & heroine so he knows when she’s getting busy. They showed her going shopping and she just pointed and picked out. Mario looked at the bill and laughed but he bought it for her anyway. He feels bad because he believes that he is aiding in her bad behavior but because he wants to believe in her, it’s hard for him to say no. He should have said no. She’s placed him in a jacked up position but then again it’s his mom and she’s an addict.

Despite all this drama, Mario still manages to stay on top of his game, but for how long. Will her addiction cause him to pull away from his career to take care of her? He calls her and tells her that he’s sending her to a treatment center and she said there is nothing a center can do. She claims that only God can tell her when to stop. She pulls the “we have a strong bond” line and makes him feel bad. Claims that she’s already better and that he’s trying to send away the strong bond and that he’s her strength. Classic druggie move. He shows that he’s hurt and upset but is trying to stay strong.

June 2007 in Baltimore, the mom claims that his success lies within her. That’s trouble because she’s nowhere near ready to be on tour with him. The first urge will lead to the nearest dealer. She calls the manager and says that she wants to be on the tour because her being on a regular job with her addiction will be a problem. If that’s the case then why be on his tour? It’s a business!! To see an addict try to make a business deal is funny. She claims that it’s about her needing to be where she’s supposed to be and learn everything about his career. She’s not seeing that she’s a liability. She claims that she needs to be solid in his business and that’s a problem with the manager. He’s being the correct manager who’s not backing down. He does not want her involved and he’s on point!! Now she claims that it’s over when she says it’s over. Mario stands up to her and says that what she’s doing is wrong. He’s not going to simply accept her using, especially around her. She walks away from him in the mist of a conversation.

Mario goes online and searches for help to get through to his mom. He got in touch with intervention 911 and they gave him the rundown of what happens in an intervention. They told her that he needs to be more forceful in helping her and he seems highly reluctant because of maybe how she will react. Mario is strong about sending his mom back in rehab. She’s showing that she is truly using. She’s in the bathroom for long periods of time and falling asleep while speaking to her. She looks completely out of it and it’s freaky. For a child to have to step up and take care of their parents in this way is rough. Mario’s fame has brought easier access to her drugs and Mario recruits her boyfriend to help. He lets Mario know that it’s serious and she needs help. He also gets her friend involved and she asks if he’s really prepared to do this. She says that he’s one of her enablers and he agrees. Kevin, the Intervention Specialist, lets them know what will happen and has Mario write a letter to his mom.

They go to Mario’s hotel room and wake up his mom, Shawn. The intervention begins and she begins to cry. Mario is in pieces and trying to stay strong. He tells her that he loves her but will not love her to death. His speech to her was a really good one and the mom agrees to go to the treatment center. They pack her things and send her to Los Angeles. Before she leaves she requests $50 to get a last fix before taking the flight. She claims that she does not want to be on the flight sick and this is the “real deal.” This is what she does, no reason to hide anymore. She says that she was at the drug spot yesterday and bought two $50 fixes but used both yesterday. Now she takes herself down again to get her fix and is more open about what she’s really doing.

She comes back with a tiny bag and goes back to the hotel to do her drugs. She’s cooking her fix in front of him, out in the open and on film. She states that she’s tired of living her life in the bathroom. She’s really hyper but not completely high yet and Mario says that when she crashes, it’s hard. This is another stint in rehab but kicking such powerful combinations can be difficult. At least that’s what the A&E show Intervention has shown us. She reaches the center and tells them that her drug of choice is heroine and she uses daily. One month later she seems brighter and more alert; but how long will this last? Mario comes to visit her after a month of her in treatment. The center wants her to stay a little longer but she says no – she agreed to 30 days and that’s all. She’s not trying to stay and keep herself as clear of drugs as possible in the initial meeting with Mario and the doctor. Once Mario leaves, she changes her mind and decides to stay a little while longer.

Mario goes to celebrate his 21st birthday and is excited to welcome his mom home when she returns. Hopefully she’ll be in a better position to stick around and take an active role in his life.
