Love on Garbage Can Lid

garbagelid Why do folks think that others in the world, especially family and close friends, would shit on a good relationship they may be in? One particular reason that I know makes a situation such as this not the fault of family is when a person in love serves their love on a garbage can lid to their family and close friends.

Why keep a relationship secret (or the direction the relationship is going) and then bring this person who is practically a stranger to your family as a new edition to the family? That seems as though you are either ashamed of the family, friends, or relationship. Something is not right in this scenario.

The best example I can give of this is Vanessa Huxtable of the Cosby Show. As she got older and felt that she found love, she never revealed the situation or romance to her family until after she was engaged to the man for six months and met his entire family. His family, friends and her friends knew of the engagement the moment it happened. Now the Huxtables (the parents) were not too thrilled with the situation; not because they despised the man or the romance, but they were not given the courtesy that most parents would expect and deserve. That would include to be introduced to a person that their child fell in love with. This is not done for judgment but for awareness of what is happening in their family.

Mr. Huxtable was on point when he told the man how he and Mrs. Huxtable felt about the situation. You have your favorite meal and the food smells and probably taste great. Just as it is ready, the chef removes the lid off a garbage can and places all the food on it and serves it to you. Would you be pleased and eat the meal? Of course not. So why treat your relationship in that manner? Why nurture and cultivate it to the point that it is ready for harvesting and sharing with your friends and family only to place it on a garbage can lid?

Did you not think that your relationship was worthy of a better presentation? Your family? Friends?

Folks, the next time someone’s family does not welcome you with open arms, think of how you were presented to them. Look around, perhaps you’re sitting on a garbage can lid.
