Many were outraged and even started discussion groups over the thought of the first Negro Disney Princess being a frog for the majority of the film. The thought of her even being transformed to begin with brought outrage and I was even amongst the outraged. As a measurement for myself I attempt to give visual accounts for the majority of things I critique and The Princess and the Frog almost changed that. I stuck to my guns and gave the film a look and was not as outraged as I thought I would be.
The formula for most mystical, creature infested films of Disney follow similar recipes and this would be no different. The film Avatar, however, was a movie that I was to preview months ago but conflicting schedules prevented me from doing so. The word of this film was kept to a minimum buzz and most critics panned the film. No one truly broke down what this was to be and I was not prepared for the film.
Besides it being Ferngully revisited, Avatar was a film that spoke true to what most Negros had to endure throughout history and continue to experience today. From being depicted as “savages” to strangers who never encountered them with anything but violence, the tribes trying to fight for their survival were left forever changed and at times devastated.
As with most plots set out by Whites, the main plan was to infiltrate the Negro savages by mixes their Human (White folks) DNA with that from the Na’vi (Negros) and then learn their ways/traditions. By accomplishing these feats Whites felt that they would be in better positions to “change the minds” of the natural inhabitants and have them change the location of their homes after they have lived and populated that land for centuries without turmoil. Sound familiar? America renamed, Africa renamed, China renamed?
Well, the good White folks were not moving the Na’vi for nothing, there was money to be made from nutrients within the planet that Whites could not understand where the spiritual connection came from. They laughed at the thought of the Na’vi having a spiritual bond to the planet and a huge tree, when they continue to push off their Christianity and folklore Jesus at the Na’vi people. Trade u a spiritual belief for a religious one!
The fact that the silence in the theater became deafening when I cheered alongside my Negro compadres when the Na’vi began to win and became a force to reckon with did not amaze me, but rather amused me. To know that so many would view this movie and still not make a real connection showed just how blind we as a nation are. There should have been not simply discussions but actual awakenings to what was happening in our world around us.
The Avatar is simply another film put out to see who is paying attention and what new ways we can be blinded and brought into the sheep fold. Well, I’m listening and I’m paying close attention. Not only is Avatar a MUST SEE but it’s also a MUST FOCUS film. Can Negros finally pull their shit together and find unity? Not if they stay focused on a frog alone.
