Usually folks claim identification with their geographic location, but more and more have accepted identification through ethnic grouping. One set of people in particular would be Guyanese people. If one was to glance at a map or visit South America, the assumption could easily be made that Guyanese people are Latin. Alas, assumptions are usually frowned upon for a reason.
Oddly enough, Guyanese folks that I have come across consider themselves Caribbean. Perhaps what is odd is that Venezuelans and Brazilians do not consider themselves Caribbean also. I have heard that Guyanese people believe they have more in common with Caribbean residents then their direct next door neighbors. There must be a true underlying reasoning for the identification other than simply similarities. Caribbeans and Latin Americans all eat chicken, so can we claim Southern ties as well? Or is it how the chicken is prepared? Who knows, but the hunt for an answer continues. The research has just begun.
