Review: The cast had me hooked before the movie was completed. Once it was ready to broadcast, I was ready to view it. I had positive hopes for this film and was not disappointed. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Donald Wahlberg, John Leguizamo, and even Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson all gave great performances. Most know of De Niro & Pacinos previous team up: Heat; however, Wahlberg and Leguizamo also had a previous hook up during the highly rated FX Series: The Kill Point. Jackson already gave us gangster in his film debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ so I was ready for what he had to offer. The people behind Inside Man were responsible for this feature and that brought quality to the table, would they live up to it was another story.

I wonder how many films Jackson must do before the industry refrains from referring to him as “rapper-turned-actor.” How long did it take before Wahlberg was no longer called “pop star-turned-actor,” or Leguizamo was no longer addressed as “comedian-turned-actor?” Not sure, but it will be worth noting. Jackson has taken his role as an actor seriously thus far. He was not cast as the typical angry Black man slinging dope on the street corner with his pants down wearing gold ropes around his neck. He wore clothes that fit and was in an office most of the film. Yes he was a top level dope pusher, but then aren’t regulated pharmacists?

The movie had intrigue and a good plot. They gave a bit more away earlier than with Inside Man but the movie still kept its purpose – to entertain. The on screen chemistry worked well for all involved and kept the story moving. No dragged out torture fest with this film. A film where someone gets sick and tired of leeches sucking the world dry and the person decides to take action. No, the concept of a vigilante is not new, not even how the murders were occurring. What was different was the story-telling technique. Fast, clean, complete.

Tension between the old and new; partners; the priest’s scene; the meltdown; and the swan dive were nice memories to take away from the film. The entire cast served their purpose and I walked away without the nagging question of “why were they needed again?” So much so that I saw it in theaters, copped the bootlegged, and will purchase the real deal… I am willing to pay multiple times for this and not one complaint. A believable story and wonderfully executed performances.

This work gets 9.5 blades and Tito from the Bx gets 10 handcuffs for clarity.
